The Value of Good Design

Let’s unpack the value of Good Design in less than two minutes. Here’s the question: Why is design a critically important company asset? The brand experience is the company’s front-facing identity that must be influential at every touchpoint. Within 3-6-9-seconds of visiting a website or seeing a social media post, decision-makers will opt to explore and engage a brand or dismiss it outright. Design is life and death for startups, and the risk of failure is especially high for entrepreneurs from IT or engineering who, throughout their growth, haven’t been exposed to visualized design or branding.

It’s tricky. For instance, ventures envisioned by engineers are more at risk than others. The gap can result in a mindset that selects cheap and fast, whereas good design is considered a valid investment, not a troublesome expense.

We have had a handful of exceptional tech-based clients who value design and brand intelligence. John Plummer, now retired from Corning Incorporated, prioritized our firm’s financial health because he knew Steuben’s digital transformation was the business's future, and together, we were responsible for building the platform for a global market.

Designers play a decisive role in shaping a company. Design is a company’s biggest differentiator and is essential to its success based on every response at every touchpoint. Design makes your brand memorable and actionable. Good design combines the visual look and feel with language, the secret sauce of brand identity.

Clear design evolves from great collaborations and shared experiences. Great relationships share a mutual understanding that design is ultimately the valuation of a business. Clients present the public branded face to investors; thus, design becomes the value of the venture.

Pick two: Good and cheap won’t be fast. Fast and good won’t be cheap. Cheap and fast won’t be good. Cutting corners never occurs to certain project managers, nor is “cheap and fast.” Don’t get me wrong, startup founders’ pain points are real, but valuing design solves big hurdles, and design is a learned language that can make or break your startup.
